Every photograph in On Concealment passed through the same seven steps. This is the anatomy of one of them.
Every portrait in On Concealment began as a sentence in the notebook, not a picture. The sitter and I agreed on one thing they would keep hidden, and everything else followed from that.
Seven steps
Sentence, sketch, cloth, light, sitting, edit, print. The sitting itself is the shortest of the seven — usually under an hour. The edit takes weeks.

— Field notes, fourth evening
Printing is where the photograph is finally decided. I proof each image three times on different papers before signing the first of the edition.

None of the seven steps are secret. The only rule is not to skip any of them.
