For a month in Alentejo I kept only the second frame of every sequence — the one made after everyone had relaxed.
It started as an accident. A friend laughed just after I pressed the shutter, and the frame I made a second later — blurred, half-turned, unguarded — was the only one from that afternoon I wanted to keep.
After the picture
For the rest of the month I made every photograph twice and kept only the second. The first frame is what I meant; the second is what was actually there.

“The sea did not change. I did.”
— Field notes, fourth evening
The light in Alentejo in August is too strong for most of the day. I worked early and late, and in the long shade of whitewashed walls.

I still make the first frame. I just no longer expect it to be the photograph.
